MEET MOUTH PAINTER - SUSIE MATTHIAS, C.M.
Born in London, Ontario, Susie Matthias, C.M. discovered her love of art at a young age. Born without arms or legs as a result of the drug Thalidomide, Susie developed her unique mouth-painting technique with the support of her family and went on to study art at Saunders Secondary School and Fanshawe College.
In the early 1990s, Susie joined the MFPA, giving her the opportunity to pursue her passion for painting as a full-time career. Her talent was recognised nationally when one of her paintings was selected for a special Canada Post Christmas stamp in 2000. She became a Full Member Artist in 2009.
Susie's artwork has since found its way into the collections of notable Canadians, including astronaut Chris Hadfield and former Lieutenant Governor David Onley. She also had the honour of presenting a painting to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as a gift from Canada.
A lifelong resident of London, Susie enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as swimming, boccia, wheelchair ballroom dancing and electric wheelchair floor hockey. In 2024, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. Through her art, Susie continues to share her creativity, optimism and love of life with people around the world.
