MEET MOUTH PAINTER - GRANT SHARMAN

Born in Auckland in 1961, Grant Sharman's life took an unexpected turn at just 15 when he broke his neck in a rugby match, leaving him quadriplegic and putting an end to his childhood dream of becoming a pilot. After leaving the hospital, he found purpose working with the Auckland Area Health Board as a patient advocate and counsellor.

In 1980, mouth painter Bruce Hopkins introduced Grant to painting with a brush held in his mouth. His talent developed quickly: within a year he'd earned a scholarship from the Association, and by 1988 he was a Full Member of the VDMFK.

Grant's paintings, largely flowers and landscapes, reflect a deep love of nature and a natural artistic instinct. His work has been exhibited and awarded throughout New Zealand and abroad, drawing significant media attention. He held his first solo exhibition in 1991.

Alongside his art, Grant is a Paralympic athlete, having captained New Zealand's wheelchair rugby team, the Wheel Blacks, to medal success. He also speaks at schools and organisations, sharing his story of resilience.
