MEET MOUTH PAINTER - WALERY SIEJTBATALOW
Born on 8 June 1965 in Denisovka, Kazakhstan, Walery Siejtbatalow's life changed when he suffered a cervical spinal injury after jumping from a hill into a river, leaving him reliant on a wheelchair. Determined to find a new way to express himself, he began writing with a pen held in his mouth, eventually discovering he could paint and draw the same way. He taught himself entirely, and in 2012 received his first scholarship from the VDMFK.
A colourfully illustrated children's Bible sparked his interest in religious imagery, and he began painting motifs of Christ and biblical scenes. His technique grew over the years to include stained-glass window designs and portraits of friends, before he turned to oil paints, starting with an icon that would be the first of several award-winning religious works.
His talent has been recognised by the Church itself: Archbishop Anthony of Ural and Guryevsk once visited him and bestowed upon him a high religious honour. Walery has since held numerous exhibitions, warmly received by the public.
