MEET MOUTH PAINTER - MARIAM PARÉ

Born in Morocco, Mariam moved to the United States with her family as a young child. At 20, her life changed dramatically when she became the victim of gun violence, leaving her quadriplegic. Before her injury, Mariam was studying art and dreaming of becoming an artist. During rehabilitation, she discovered a new way to continue pursuing her passion when she learned to write by holding a pen in her mouth. She soon began adapting this technique to painting and taught herself to paint with her mouth.

In 2003, Mariam returned to college to complete her bachelor's degree in Studio Art. She continued developing her skills and began exhibiting her work in national exhibitions and private galleries. As her career grew, Mariam also began sharing her story through television, news and newspaper features, using her experiences to encourage others through her message of perseverance.

Mariam received a scholarship from the Association in 2006, became an Associate Member of the VDMFK in 2016, and achieved Full Membership in 2023.

Today, Mariam works from her studio in Chicago, creating expressive artwork in oils, acrylics and mixed media. She also collaborates with artists in photography and videography, continually exploring new ways to express her creativity.
