ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lars Höllerer discovered his artistic talent under extremely difficult circumstances: since a motorcycle accident in 1991, he has been quadriplegic and can only move his head. “I went from 100 to zero,” he says, “I can consider myself lucky to be back at ten.”
He made his first attempts at painting by holding the brush in his mouth as part of art therapy at the rehabilitation clinic. In the following years, Lars Höllerer devoted himself to painting as a self-taught artist, then attended an art academy. Lars Höllerer became a scholarship holder of the AAPBP in 1999 and a member in 2007. In addition to the significant financial support he receives, he attaches great importance to contact with other mouth and foot painters. He enjoys participating in international meetings and workshops. His oil paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions and have attracted the attention of radio and television. In particular, they have reported on his visits to kindergartens, where he shows children how to paint with their mouths, lets them try it themselves, and patiently answers their questions. A more natural attitude towards people with disabilities is very important to him.
He draws inspiration from the landscapes of Paul Cézanne, finds his own pictorial language for his motifs of children and animals, experiments with different styles of nudes, designs eccentric urban landscapes, and paints abstract compositions.
