ABOUT THE ARTIST
In 1989, a swimming pool accident resulted in a fractured neck at C5–C6, leaving Ross Stonham tetraplegic. In an instant, life as he knew it changed forever. At the time, he was married with two young sons — Elliot, just 11 months old, and Blake, two years old. The accident reshaped not only his life, but his family’s as well.
Prior to his injury, he was a successful insurance agent with AMP Society, running his own business. Unable to continue in that profession, his path shifted after meeting an artist associated with MFPA who encouraged him to explore painting. That encouragement proved transformative. In 1995, he was accepted as a student artist, beginning a new and unexpected chapter in his life.
Art has since become a powerful source of purpose and expression.
Ross has always loved the outdoors and the beach. He and his wife Sandy, married for 16 years, spend much of their time at Mt Maunganui, a place that brings both restoration and inspiration. He also uses a hand-bike to stay active, exercising both mind and body while embracing independence in new ways.
Today, his sons are grown and have wonderful partners, and family remains central to his life.
His hopes for the future are simple: continued good health and happiness, and many more years enjoying life with his wife and family.
